STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

This is a reminder that the FAFSA Night for all seniors and parents is tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 24th from 6:30 to 8:00. Please make sure parents bring their taxes.

FBLA members: Remember to arrange with Mrs. Hays to take your test online this week!! It will take approximately one hour for each test. Members planning on attending the contest at NWMSU need to have your permission slips to me by Friday, Feb. 27.

Time: 7 pm to 7 am
Cost: $12
Who: Any BHS student in good standing
What: Fun event in a drug-free environment
Why: To get together with friends and staff to get to know each other and have FUN

There will be an informational POMS meeting for all who are interested in trying out for the 2009-2010 school year. The meeting will be Wednesday, February 25 during 5th hour in Room 204.

There are several activities that we need people to help with this month:

2.We need volunteers to help at the Second Harvest Food Bank on Thursday, Feb. 26th, from 3:30 to 5:30.

3.Volunteers are needed to help serve at the Southside Rotary Soup and Chili Supper on Saturday, February 28th. Helpers will work a 2-hour shift, between about 2:00 until 7:00. You will get to eat while you volunteer.

4.Someone is needed to update our FOR Club database with 2nd semester classes so we can send out memos to members. This would probably be an after-school job.

IF YOU HAVE RECEIVED A “LATE NOTICE FOR AN OVERDUE BOOK” Please return or renew your book ASAP. Detentions are being given out for books that are not turned back in.

SOCCER BOYS that are interested in coaching, working with younger children and want to earn some volunteer hours or just want to apply for the SJYSA scholarship, Volunteer coaching positions are open for this spring. For more information, see Coach Milbourn in the Library.

A+ TUTOR TRAINING will be Thursday, February 26th at 2:50 p.m. in the Benton Library. Any questions, stop by the A+ Office in the Library.

All students that are interested in pursuing a CAREER in healthcare the Missouri Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Pipeline is going to be visiting Benton on Feb. 25th during seminar. Please sign up in the Counseling Center.

The SOUTHSIDE ROTARY will be hosting a chili and soup supper on February 28th from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Wesley Center. (all you can eat) pie's and drinks are included. The proceeds go to the Rotary Scholarships (BHS kids) and Projects. Adults - $6.00 Children - $4.00 See Mr. Modis for tickets.

MWSU Spring ACT Prep Course: Students will learn test-taking strategies and review English, mathematics, reading and science reasoning. There are five Saturday class sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. starting February 28th. Cost is $141.50 and the deadline to enroll is 4:00 p.m. on February 20th.

CHEERLEADING tryouts for the 2009-2010 school year will be held March 9th thru March 13th. For forms and information please see Mrs. Allen in Rm. 103

Bentley the Benton Mascot tryouts will be March 16th - 18th. If you are interested in trying out, please come by room 209 and pick up a packet. Any questions see Mrs. Tami Davis.

BENTON LITERARY MAGAZINE is now taking submissions until March 16th. Send your submissions to bentonlitmag@gmail.com or bring them by Ms. Snyder’s Room 205.

The regular deadline to register for the April 4th ACT will be this Friday, February 27th. The April test will be the next-to-last time to take the ACT this year. If you are on free or reduced lunch or participate in Upward Bound, you can take the ACT at no charge. Your counselor can give you the fee waiver. Sophomores who want to qualify for Dual Credit math should also take the test. See your counselor for registration materials. Be sure to sign up in the Counseling Center for the ACT prep class that will be offered during 5th period.

Copies of the February issue of Senior Scoops have been delivered to senior language arts classes and are also available in the Counseling Center. Many new scholarships have been added to the scholarship listings in PrepHQ. See Mrs. Nelson or Mrs. Arambula if you are having trouble using PrepHQ.

Mr. BHS competition, sponsored by the Benton prom committee will be on Wednesday April 8th from 6 - 9 p.m. Mark your calendar because you will NOT want to miss it.

FCA meets every Friday in A123 at 7:00 a.m.

COLLEGES VISITING BENTON: Any student interested in attending needs to sign up in the counseling office by the end of the day prior to the visit.

The University of Missouri-Columbia Medical School is offering an exciting summer experience for juniors interested in medicine. The Mini Medical School is a week long experience either from July 5-9 or July 12-16. Selection is not determined by ACT or GPA, so all students should apply if you are interested. Applications are due by March 15th. Please see Mrs. Arambula if you would like more information.

CPOD is a week-long free summer program at Linn State Technical College from June 7-12. The leadership program will help students learn more about career opportunities in computer field.

The US Military Academy is having a summer leader’s seminar for juniors from May 30-June 5 or June 6-12 at West Point. The cost is $325 plus transportation to West Point. Application is due April 1st. Apply online at www.admissions.usma.edu.
